Adaptive traffic system to ease congestion in Gaya
Gaya: The installation of an adaptive traffic control system (ATCS) in the city, aimed at easing chronic congestion and reducing dependence on manual traffic management, is likely to be completed within the next three months. The project has missed its earlier June 30 deadline due to slow progress. Municipal commissioner Abhishek Palasia said the system would now be ready within three months. “Work is under progress,” Abhishek said.Traffic deputy superintendent of police Sudhir Kumar said the system would benefit both traffic personnel and commuters. At present, traffic constables are deployed manually at 50 locations, including Rai Kashinath Mor, Kotwali, G B Road-Bazaza Road intersection and Gewalbigha. The ATCS will enable real-time traffic management along with features such as automatic number plate recognition, facial recognition and a public address system. The project covers the city, its outskirts and parts of the Gaya-Dobhi Road. The Gaya Municipal Corporation has identified 75 locations for installation of 294 poles and 668 CCTV cameras.ATCS uses sensors, cameras and AI-based algorithms to adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic flow, unlike fixed-time systems.
This is expected to reduce congestion, cut waiting time and improve road safety.Though relatively expensive, the system is seen as a significant upgrade over traditional traffic lights due to its responsiveness and efficiency.Abhishek said key locations identified for installation include Rai Kashinath Mor, collectorate roundabout, Mirza Ghalib College Mor and Sikaria Mor. Additional sites may be included as required.Sources said necessary approvals have been obtained from the National Highways Authority of India and the road construction department for installations along stretches between Gaya and Bodh Gaya.As per earlier directions of the district magistrate, poles must be installed only at designated edge points, and not in the middle of roads.
